Secure the permit before the rest of the trip
Gorilla permits are limited for each trekking date and sector. Confirm availability before paying for flights or non-refundable accommodation. Your permit determines the trekking area and should guide the lodge location.
Bwindi or Mgahinga?
Bwindi has several trekking sectors and the widest range of lodge choices. Mgahinga offers a compact mountain setting and combines naturally with golden-monkey experiences. Availability and the wider route often make the final decision.
Prepare for an unpredictable trek
A trek may be relatively short or extend for several hours depending on the gorillas’ location, terrain and weather.
- Wear broken-in waterproof hiking footwear
- Carry rain protection and gardening-style gloves
- Take water and a packed lunch
- Hire a porter for support and local economic benefit
- Follow ranger instructions throughout
Choose the right lodge location
Bwindi’s sectors are not interchangeable at the last minute. Staying near the correct briefing point avoids an exhausting early transfer and protects the morning schedule.
Build recovery time into the route
Avoid placing a long cross-country transfer immediately after trekking. A second night nearby or a relaxed continuation toward Lake Bunyonyi can make the itinerary more comfortable.
