Pack for layers, not extremes
Mornings can feel cool, afternoons warm and forest conditions damp. Lightweight layers adapt better than bulky single-purpose clothing.
Safari clothing essentials
- Neutral lightweight shirts and trousers
- A warm layer for early departures
- A compact waterproof jacket
- A hat, sunglasses and reliable sunscreen
- Comfortable closed shoes plus light lodge footwear
For gorilla or chimpanzee trekking
- Waterproof hiking shoes with grip
- Long trousers and long sleeves
- Gardening-style gloves
- A small daypack and rain cover
- Reusable water bottle
Technology and documents
Carry digital and offline copies of your passport, insurance, permits and itinerary. A power bank, universal adapter, camera batteries and protected memory cards are useful on remote routes.
What to leave behind
Avoid excessive formal clothing, hard suitcases on vehicle-heavy trips and too many duplicate items. Laundry is available at many lodges, although same-day service is not guaranteed.
